Here's a list of some of books and articles that I suggest for my readers. I plan to review some of these books in the near future.


Title: Breakthrough: Elizabeth Hughes, the Discovery of Insulin and the Making of a Medical Miracle

Authors: Thea Cooper and Arthur Ainsburg

Description: This book chronicles the fascinating story of the discovery of insulin and juxtaposes it with the personal story of one of the first recipients of insulin: Elizabeth Hughes, daughter of Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes. A must read for anyone who has a connection to diabetes because the history of insulin is our history.



Title: Not Dead Yet: My Race Against Disease from Diagnosis to Dominance

Author: Phil Southerland with John Hanc

Description: Phil Southerland was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of seven months. Today, he is a retired professional cyclist and Founder/CEO of Team Type 1, a professional team of cyclists with diabetes whose mission is to advocate for people with diabetes. Phil shares intimate stories about his life with diabetes and tips for how to properly manage the disease.


Title: Diabetes Rising: How a Rare Disease Became a Modern Pandemic and What to Do About It

Author: Dan Hurley

Description: Few people realize that autoimmune diseases in general, and type 1 diabetes specifically, are on the rise in developed countries. Dan Hurley investigates the myriad of scientific theories that attempt to explain why diabetes is rising. Don't worry if you are not scientifically literate. Dan Hurley, who has type 1 diabetes, describes the theories very clearly in layman's terms.



Title: Salt, Sugar, Fat: How the Food Industry Hooked Us

Author: Michael Moss

Description:  This book begins by describing a secret meeting that took place in 1999 between food industry leaders regarding their culpability in the obesity epidemic. It describes how food chemists adjust levels of salt, sugar, and fats in processed foods and the dire consequences it is having on the health of all Americans.
